Summary: Maximus the Confessor reports that Papias, like Clement, called those who lived in godly innocence "children".

### Greek text

Τοὺς κατὰ Θεὸν ἀκακίαν ἀσκοῦντας παῖδας ἐκάλουν , ὡς καὶ Παπίας δηλοῖ βιβλίῳ πρώτῳ τῶν Κυριακῶν ᾿Εξηγήσεων, καὶ Κλήμης ὁ ᾿Αλεξανδρεὺς ἐν τῷ Παιδαγωγῷ.

### English translation (Claude)

They used to call those who practiced innocence in God's way "children," as Papias also shows in the first book of the Expositions of the Lord's Sayings, and Clement of Alexandria in the Instructor.

### Scripture references

- Matt 18:3: echo, low confidence

### Extrabiblical texts

- Clement of Alexandria, Paed. 1.5 (The Instructor): allusion, medium confidence

### Translation notes

- Preserved by Maximus the Confessor in a scholion on Pseudo-Dionysius, On the Celestial Hierarchy 2; the sentence is Maximus's report, not Papias's own words. Clement: Instructor 1.5–6. The Greek is uncorrected OCR of Routh; a clear slip is corrected (logged).

Summary: Papias's account of Judas's death: his body swelled so that he was crushed by a wagon and his bowels gushed out.

### English translation (Claude)

Judas walked about in this world as a great example of ungodliness. For his flesh swelled so much that he could not pass where a wagon passes easily; he was crushed by the wagon, so that his bowels were emptied out.

### Scripture references

- Acts 1:18: allusion, high confidence
- Matt 27:5: allusion, medium confidence

### Translation notes

- Preserved by Apollinaris of Laodicea (in Oecumenius on Acts 1:18), from Papias, book 4. Other witnesses give a longer form of the story, in which Judas dies on his own land; this short form is translated as printed. Compare Acts 1:18; Matt 27:5. The Greek is uncorrected OCR of Routh; clear slips are corrected (logged).

Summary: Papias taught that God gave some angels rule over the earth, but their order came to nothing (they fell).

### Greek text

᾿Ενίοις δὲ αὐτῶν, δηλαδὴ τῶν πάλαι θείων ἀγγέλων, καὶ τῆς περὶ τὴν γῆν διακοσμήσεως ἔδωκεν ἄρχειν, καὶ καλῶς ἄρχειν παρηγγύησε. Καὶ ἑξῆς φησίν: εἰς οὐδὲν δὲ συνέβη τελευτῆσαι τὴν τάξιν αὐτῶν.

### English translation (Claude)

To some of them (that is, of the angels who were divine of old) he gave rule also over the ordering of the earth, and charged them to rule well. And next he says: But it came about that their order came to nothing.

### Scripture references

- Rev 12:9: echo, medium confidence

### Translation notes

- Preserved by Andrew of Caesarea, Commentary on Revelation (on Rev 12:7–9), from Papias; the explanatory words in brackets are Andrew's. Compare Rev 12:7–9. The Greek is uncorrected OCR of Routh.
