### Latin text

Multis occupatus necessitatibus litteris tuis tardius respondi, carissime. Uale in Christo!

### English translation (Claude)

Occupied with many necessities, I have answered your letter rather late, dearest friend. For you had asked that, against the cunning deceit of the heretics, I should find by careful searching in the divine Scriptures some very strong bulwark—not long or tedious, but neat and elegant—by which the impudence of those might be overthrown more quickly who, when the truest testimonies are put to them, strive to interpret them in their own most perverse sense, or else deny that they are written. And therefore you say that against them something must be devised that does not swell with the cunning eloquence of an orator or wrap itself in the slippery syllogisms of dialectic—for these are usually the greatest refuges for some—but you want it to be such as shines with pure truth and stands on the wonderful authority of the Scriptures; and that those things should be avoided which are contrary and hostile to the spiritual and innocent Christian faith, since, being the wisdom of the world, it has been called folly by the apostle. Hearing these things from you very often, and since you wrote these and similar things to me, it seemed good to me to take the Scriptures themselves and set them in the middle—that is, the fourteen letters of the most blessed apostle Paul—and to distinguish in their text the senses of the testimonies, to arrange numbers for the testimonies themselves, and to mark these numbers above in ink for each of the letters, beginning from one and continuing in order to the end of its length. Further, plucking certain words from these testimonies, I composed canons consisting of the same flavour as the testimonies themselves. Under these canons I have noted the titles of the letters and the numbers of the testimonies, so that wherever, or whichever, testimony you seek, you may find it very easily through the canon under which they are placed. The canons themselves have their own numbers, written in red—that is, ninety canons for the fourteen letters—and you will find these numbers marked above, throughout the whole text of Scripture, on the testimonies that fit them, namely at the place from which a few words seemed necessary for each canon. Why a canon does not contain the whole testimony, notice with careful attention: the testimonies consist of many verses, but the canons of few words, because a few words are always brought forward when answering. And so it happens that with some testimonies only the beginning agrees with the canon under which they are placed, with others the middle, with some the end, and often the whole. And for that reason you will find the numbers of two or three or more canons marked in red above a single testimony, as I said, yet at the place from which a few words seem necessary for each. I want you to understand that I have worked hard at this so that I might faithfully make plain the content of the Scriptures, being an enemy to no one, and so that the minds of those in error might be corrected more quickly, as you asked. Farewell in Christ!

### Scripture references

- 1 Cor 3:19: allusion, high confidence

### Translation notes

- This proem explains the numbering used throughout: the numbers after each letter in the canons refer to the author's own division of each letter into numbered testimonies, not to chapters. The canons survive in the revision of the Spanish bishop Peregrinus, who removed what he judged erroneous. "Folly": 1 Cor 3:19.
