About this work

Author
Clement of Rome
Attribution
authentic · The letter is sent in the name of the church at Rome and names no author. From the second century it was attributed to Clement (Dionysius of Corinth, in Eusebius, Hist. eccl. 4.23.11), and most scholars accept that a Roman church leader of that name wrote it.
Older English translation
Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. 1 (1885) (public domain, at CCEL; for comparison: our translation is made from the original first and checked against it afterwards) · That translation lacks 57.7–63.4 (a missing leaf in its manuscript); vol. 9 (1896) translates the complete text.
Date
ca. 95–97 (range ca. 70–100) (disputed) · Usually dated to the end of Domitian's reign (ca. 95–97), partly because 1.1 mentions recent 'misfortunes'; some scholars argue for an earlier date.
