Chapter 2
2Otto, CorpApol 9 9:486

Irenaeus and Clement, Apollinaris of Hierapolis and Serapion, who presided over the church at Antioch, in the treatises they labored over, speak of the one who became man as having a soul, as something agreed [among them].

Notes and citation
Summary: A later historian reports that Apollinaris, with Irenaeus, Clement, and Serapion, taught that the incarnate Word had a human soul.
- This is not Apollinaris's own wording but a report by the church historian Socrates (Church History 3.7), who names him among early writers who held that Christ had a soul. The editor brackets αὐτοῖς (“among them”).

Chapter 3
3Otto, CorpApol 9 9:486-487
Eisi toinyn hoi di᾽ agnoian philoneikousi peri toutōn, syngnōston pragma peponthotes; agnoia gar ou katēgorian anadechetai, alla didachēs prosdeitai; kai legousin hoti tę̄ idʹ to probaton meta tōn mathētōn ephagen ho kyrios, tę̄ de megalę̄ hēmerą tōn azymōn autos epathen, kai diēgountai Matthaion houtō legein hōs nenoēkasin; hothen asymphōnos te nomǭ hē noēsis autōn, kai stasiazein dokei kat᾽ autous ta euangelia.
There are, then, some who out of ignorance are contentious about these things, having suffered something pardonable; for ignorance does not call for accusation but needs further teaching. And they say that on the fourteenth the Lord ate the lamb with the disciples, and that on the great day of Unleavened Bread he himself suffered; and they explain that Matthew says this, as they have understood him. Hence their understanding is out of harmony with the law, and on their view the Gospels seem to be at variance.
Matt 26:17 (allusion, medium confidence) · Exod 12:6 (allusion, medium confidence)
Notes and citation
Summary: Apollinaris answers those who hold that Jesus ate the Passover on the fourteenth and suffered on the feast day, arguing that this conflicts with the law and sets the Gospels against each other.
- From Apollinaris's On the Passover, quoted in the preface of the Chronicon Paschale (7th century). The dispute concerns the date of the crucifixion: Apollinaris holds that Jesus died on the fourteenth of Nisan, when the lambs were sacrificed (see fragment 4); his opponents read Matt 26:17 as placing the Last Supper on the fourteenth. The fourteenth is the day of the Passover sacrifice in the law (Exod 12:6).

The fourteenth is the true Passover of the Lord, the great sacrifice: the Servant of God in place of the lamb; who was bound, who bound the strong one; who was judged, the judge of the living and the dead; and who was handed over into the hands of sinners to be crucified; who was lifted up on the horns of the unicorn; and who was pierced in his holy side; who poured out from his side the two cleansings anew, water and blood, word and Spirit; and who was buried on the day of the Passover, the stone having been laid upon the tomb.

Notes and citation
Summary: Apollinaris calls the fourteenth of Nisan the Lord's true Passover and lists the events of Christ's passion and burial on that day.
- From On the Passover, quoted in the preface of the Chronicon Paschale, continuing fragment 3. “Servant” renders παῖς (servant or child), recalling Isaiah's Servant. “Bound the strong one” recalls Matt 12:29; “judge of the living and the dead” Acts 10:42 and 2 Tim 4:1; “handed over into the hands of sinners” Matt 26:45; “the horns of the unicorn” Ps 22:21 (21:22 LXX, where μονόκερως renders the Hebrew for wild ox), read of the cross; the pierced side John 19:34; water and blood 1 John 5:6–8. “Anew” renders πάλιν; its sense here is uncertain.
