About this work

Author
Athenagoras
Attribution
disputed · The Arethas codex ascribes it to Athenagoras, and the end of the Plea (ch. 36) promises a treatment of the resurrection. Some scholars (notably R. M. Grant, 1954) have argued that its style and arguments point to a later author of the third or fourth century; others (e.g. B. Pouderon) defend Athenagoras's authorship.
Older English translation
Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. 2 (1885) (public domain, at CCEL; for comparison: our translation is made from the original first and checked against it afterwards)
Date
ca. 177–180 (if by Athenagoras) (disputed) · If it is the work promised in Plea 36, it was written soon after the Plea (ca. 177–180). Those who deny Athenagoras's authorship place it in the third century or later.
