Egeria

Egeria

A woman, probably from the far west of the empire, who wrote a long account of her pilgrimage to Egypt, Mount Sinai, Palestine, Syria, and Constantinople, for the sisters of her community at home. The text is especially valuable for the liturgy of Jerusalem. It survives in one Monte Cassino manuscript copied at Arezzo; the beginning and the end are lost.

Notes
The only name for the writer is Egeria (the form Aetheria is a mis-reading of the manuscript title); her home and status are inferred from the text.
