Gregory Thaumaturgus

Γρηγόριος ὁ Θαυματουργός · Gregorius Thaumaturgus

Gregory was a student of Origen and bishop of Neocaesarea in Pontus in the mid-third century. His farewell speech to Origen is the main witness to Origen's school at Caesarea, and the creed attributed to him is an early Trinitarian statement in Greek. A paraphrase of Ecclesiastes and a letter on penitential discipline after a barbarian invasion are also ascribed to him.

Notes
Born in Neocaesarea in Pontus and trained in law, Gregory (called Theodore at birth) studied with Origen at Caesarea in Palestine and returned to become the first bishop of his home city. Eusebius (Church History 6.30; 7.14) records his studies and his part in a synod at Antioch against Paul of Samosata; later tradition, beginning with Gregory of Nyssa's Life, adds many miracles that gave him his title. Which works are his is debated, and the dates are approximate.
