Peter of Alexandria

Πέτρος Ἀλεξανδρείας · Petrus Alexandrinus

Peter was bishop of Alexandria from about 300 and died a martyr in 311. His canons on the readmission of those who had lapsed under persecution were widely used in later Eastern church law. He deposed Meletius of Lycopolis, which began the Meletian schism.

Notes
Eusebius (Church History 7.32; 9.6) calls Peter a model bishop and says he was beheaded in the ninth year of the persecution, which falls in 311. His canons on penance were written at the height of the persecution and became part of the Eastern canon law collections; other works ascribed to him survive only in fragments.
