Theognostus of Alexandria

Θεόγνωστος · Theognostus Alexandrinus

Theognostus was an Origenist teacher at Alexandria, probably head of the catechetical school, and the author of seven books of Hypotyposes (Outlines). Photius judged some of his teaching on the Son and the Spirit unsound; Athanasius used a passage on the Son's origin from the Father's being as a witness against Arius. Only fragments survive.

Notes
Photius (Bibliotheca 106) names him 'Theognostus of Alexandria and exegete'; Athanasius cites him with approval against the Arians. Whether he led the catechetical school after Pierius is uncertain.
