ἐπεὶ δὲ τὰ μὲν ἐξ ἀγεννήτου καὶ ἀφθάρτου γέγονεν, τὰ σπερματικὰ ζωῆς, συνάγεται ὡς ὁ πυρὸς καὶ ἀποτίθεται, τὸ δὲ ὑλικόν, μέχρι σύνεστι τῷ κρείττονι, μένει· ὅταν δὲ ἐκείνου χωρισθῇ, ἀπόλλυται· ἐν ἑτέρῳ γὰρ εἶχε τὸ εἶναι. τοῦτο γοῦν χωριστικὸν μὲν δυνάμει, τὸ πνεῦμα. ἀναλωτικὸν δὲ τὸ πῦρ, πῦρ δὲ τὸ ὑλικὸν νοητέον.

English · Claude translation

And since some things have come from the unbegotten and incorruptible, the seeds of life, these are gathered like the wheat and stored; but the material remains as long as it is joined to the better; when it is separated from that, it perishes, for it had its being in another. What separates by its power, then, is the Spirit, and what consumes is the fire; and by fire, material fire is to be understood.
