οὐ τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον Ἰουδαίοις προωρίσατο τὸν πρὸς αἵματος οὐδὲ τὸν πολίτην οὐδὲ τὸν προσήλυτον οὐδὲ τὸν ὁμοίως περιτετμημένον οὐδὲ τὸν ἑνὶ καὶ ταὐτῷ νόμῳ χρώμενον· ἀλλὰ ἄνωθεν καταβαίνοντα ἀπὸ Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἄγει τῷ λόγῳ τινὰ εἰς Ἱεριχὼ καὶ τοῦτον δείκνυσιν ὑπὸ λῃστῶν συγκεκεντημένον, ἐρριμμένον ἡμιθνῆτα ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ, ὑπὸ ἱερέως παροδευόμενον, ὑπὸ Λευίτου παρορώμενον, ὑπὸ δὲ τοῦ Σαμαρείτου τοῦ ἐξωνειδισμένου καὶ ἀφωρισμένου κατελεούμενον, ὃς οὐχὶ κατὰ τύχην ὡς ἐκεῖνοι παρῆλθεν, ἀλλʼ ἧκε συνεσκευασμένος ὧν ὁ κινδυνεύων ἐδεῖτο, οἶνον, ἔλαιον, ἐπιδέσμους, κτῆνος, μισθὸν τῷ πανδοχεῖ, τὸν μὲν ἤδη διδόμενον, τὸν δὲ προσυπισχνούμενον. »τίς«, ἔφη, »τούτων γέγονε πλησίον τῷ τὰ δεινὰ παθόντι;«
English · Claude translation
he did not define him in the same way as the Jews, as the blood relative, or fellow citizen, or proselyte, or one likewise circumcised, or one who uses one and the same law. Instead, in his story he leads a man going down from above, from Jerusalem to Jericho, and shows him stabbed by robbers, thrown half-dead on the road, passed by by a priest, overlooked by a Levite, but pitied by the Samaritan, who was reviled and excluded. He did not pass by by chance like them, but came equipped with what the man in danger needed: wine, oil, bandages, a beast, and payment for the innkeeper, some given at once and more promised. “Which of these,” he said, “became a neighbor to the one who suffered these terrible things?”
