Chapter 19

19.1PG 33:1065c–1068a

I have long wished, true-born and dearly beloved children of the Church, to speak to you about these spiritual and heavenly mysteries. But since I knew well that seeing is far more trustworthy than hearing, I waited for the present time, so that, finding you more open to what is said because of this experience, I might lead you by the hand into the brighter and more fragrant meadow of this paradise. Besides, you have now become able to receive the more divine mysteries, having been counted worthy of divine and life-giving baptism. Since, then, it remains to set before you a table of more perfect instruction, come, let us teach you these things exactly, so that you may know the meaning of what was done for you on that evening of your baptism.

1 Pet 5:8 (allusion, low confidence)

Notes and citation

Summary: Now that the newly baptized have experienced the mysteries, the lecturer will explain the meaning of what was done at their baptism.

  • The five Mystagogical Catecheses (19–23 here), given to the newly baptized in Easter week, are transmitted with Cyril's lectures, but some manuscripts ascribe them to his successor as bishop, John of Jerusalem, and their authorship is disputed; they may be Cyril's, perhaps revised later. The title and the reading (1 Pet 5:8–14) are not in the staged text. Allusion: 1 Pet 2:2 ("true-born" children).

First you entered the vestibule of the baptistery, and, standing facing the west, you heard yourselves commanded to stretch out your hand; and you renounced Satan as though he were present. You should know that a type of this lies in the ancient history. For when Pharaoh, that most bitter and cruel tyrant, was oppressing the free and noble people of the Hebrews, God sent Moses to bring them out of the evil slavery of the Egyptians. The doorposts were anointed with the blood of a lamb, so that the destroyer might pass by the houses that had the sign of the blood; and the people of the Hebrews was wondrously set free. But when the enemy pursued them after they had been set free, and saw the sea wondrously parted for them, he nonetheless went on, following in their very footsteps, and was at once overwhelmed and drowned in the Red Sea.

Pass over with me now from the old to the new, from the type to the reality. There, Moses sent by God into Egypt; here, Christ sent by the Father into the world; … here, Christ, to rescue those in the world who are oppressed by sin. There, the blood of a lamb averted the destroyer; here, the blood of the spotless Lamb, Jesus Christ, has been made the banisher of demons. That tyrant pursued that ancient people as far as the sea; and this shameless and bold demon, the author of evil, followed you as far as the very streams of salvation. The one was overwhelmed in the sea; and this one vanishes in the saving water.

But you are told to say, with hand outstretched, as to one present: "I renounce you, Satan." I want to tell you also why you stand facing the west; for it is necessary. Since the west is the region of visible darkness, and he, being darkness, has his dominion in darkness, for this reason you look symbolically toward the west and renounce that dark and gloomy ruler. What, then, did each of you say as he stood? "I renounce you, Satan, you wicked and most cruel tyrant"; saying, "I no longer fear your might; for Christ has destroyed it, sharing with me in blood and flesh, so that through these he might destroy death by death, so that I might not be subject to slavery for ever. I renounce you, the crafty and most villainous serpent. I renounce you, the plotter, who under pretense of friendship worked all lawlessness and caused our first parents' apostasy. I renounce you, Satan, the maker and abettor of all evil."

Then in a second phrase you are taught to say: "And all your works." The works of Satan are all sin, which it is necessary … [to renounce]; just as one who has escaped a tyrant has surely escaped his weapons too. Every kind of sin, then, is included in the works of the devil. Only know this: everything you say, especially in that most awesome hour, is written in the books of God. Whenever, then, you do anything contrary to it, you will be judged a transgressor. You renounce, then, the works of Satan, I mean all deeds and thoughts contrary to reason. [6] Then you say: "And all his pomp." The pomp of the devil is the craze for the theater, and horse races, and hunting shows, and all such vanity; from which the saint, praying to be set free, says to God: "Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity." Do not be eager for the craze of the theater, where you will see the lewdness of mimes, performed with insults and every indecency, and the frenzied dances of effeminate men; nor for the madness of those who in the hunting shows give themselves up to wild beasts in order to pamper their wretched bellies: to serve the belly with food, they themselves truly become food for the bellies of untamed beasts; and, to speak justly, for the sake of their own god, the belly, they throw their lives away headlong in single combat. Flee also the horse races, a frenzied spectacle that overturns souls. These …

Notes and citation

Summary: The candidate renounced all Satan's works, that is, every sin, and his "pomp": the theater, horse races, and wild-beast shows.

  • Contains section 6, not separated in the scan (its numeral is garbled; the phrase "And all his pomp" is displaced before it in the scan and is put back by a logged correction). "Pomp" (πομπή): the showy spectacles and display of the pagan world. A word lost after "necessary" is supplied in brackets by sense, and the section breaks off in mid-sentence. Moreover, the things hung up at idol festivals, whether meat, or bread, or other such things, defiled by the invocation of the most abominable demons, are also counted in the pomp of the devil. For as the bread and wine of the Eucharist, before the holy invocation of the adorable Trinity, were plain bread and wine, but when the invocation has been made, the bread becomes the body of Christ and the wine the blood of Christ, in the same way such foods of the pomp of Satan, though plain by nature, by the invocation …

1 Cor 10:20 (allusion, medium confidence)

Notes and citation

Summary: Foods offered at idol festivals belong to the devil's pomp: as the invocation makes the eucharistic bread and wine Christ's body and blood, so the invocation of demons defiles these foods.

  • The section breaks off in mid-sentence in the scan. The beginnings of several lines are lost at the edge of the scan and are restored by sense in logged corrections. The lecturer states that at the invocation (epiclesis) the bread "becomes" the body of Christ and the wine his blood; this is translated exactly. Allusion: 1 Cor 10:20–21.

After this you say: "And all your worship." The worship of the devil is prayer in idol temples, the things done in honor of lifeless idols: lighting lamps, or burning incense by springs or rivers, as some, deceived by dreams or by demons, have resorted to these, thinking to find a cure even for bodily ailments, and suchlike. Do not, then, go after them. Watching of birds, divination, omens, amulets, writings on leaves, sorceries, or other evil arts, and all such things, are worship of the devil. Flee these, then. For if you fall into them after renouncing Satan and enlisting with Christ, you will find the tyrant more bitter: perhaps formerly he treated you as his own and relieved you of his bitter slavery, but now he has been greatly embittered by you; and you will be deprived of Christ and will have experience of the other. Have you not heard the ancient history that tells us about Lot and his daughters? Was not he himself saved with his daughters, because he reached the mountain, while his wife became a pillar of salt, set up as a monument for ever, bearing the memory of her evil choice and turning back? Take heed, then, to yourself, and do not turn back again to what is behind, having put your hand to the plough, and turn again to the salty doings of this life; but flee to the mountain, to Jesus Christ, the stone cut without hands that has filled the world.

Summary: The devil's "worship" is idolatry, divination, and magic; those who return to them after baptism are like Lot's wife, while the faithful flee to Christ.

When, then, you renounce Satan, utterly breaking every covenant with him, the old agreements with Hades, the paradise of God is opened to you, which he planted toward the east, and from which our first father was banished for his transgression. And a symbol of this is your turning from the west to the east, the region of light. Then you were told to say: "I believe in the Father, and in the Son, and in the Holy Spirit, and in one baptism of repentance." Of these things you were told at length in the former lectures, as the grace of God allowed.

These things were done in the outer house. To God the Father be glory, power, and majesty, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

These daily initiations into the mysteries, and these new instructions, which announce new things, are useful to us, and most of all to you, who have been renewed from oldness to newness. Therefore I must set before you the continuation of yesterday's lecture on the mysteries, so that you may learn what the things done by you in the inner house symbolized. [2] As soon, then, as you entered, you took off your tunic; and this was an image of putting off the old man with his deeds. Having taken it off, you were naked, imitating in this too Christ, who was stripped naked on the cross, and by his nakedness stripped off the principalities and the powers and boldly triumphed over them on the tree. For since the hostile powers had made their lair in your members, you may no longer wear that old tunic; I do not at all mean this visible one, but the old man, who is corrupted according to the desires of deceit. May the soul that has once put him off never put him on again, but say, with the bride of Christ in the Song of Songs: "I have put off my tunic; how shall I put it on?" O wonderful thing! You were naked in the sight of all, and were not ashamed; for truly you bore the likeness of the first-formed Adam,

Then, when you had been stripped, you were anointed with exorcised oil from the very hairs of the top of your head to the parts below; and you became sharers in the good olive tree, Jesus Christ. For you were cut off from the wild olive tree and grafted into the good olive tree, and became sharers in the richness of the true olive tree. The exorcised oil, then, was a symbol of sharing in the richness of Christ, being a charm to drive away every trace of hostile power. For as the breathing of the saints and the invocation of the name of God, like the fiercest flame, burn and drive out demons, so this exorcised oil too, by the invocation of God and by prayer, receives such power that it not only burns and cleanses away the traces of sins but also drives away all the invisible powers of the evil one.

After these things you were led by the hand to the holy pool of divine baptism, as Christ was carried from the cross to the tomb close at hand. And each was asked whether he believed in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And you made the saving confession, and went down three times into the water, and came up again; and here too you hinted by a symbol at the three-day burial of Christ. For as our Savior spent three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, so you too, in your first coming up, imitated the first day of Christ in the earth, and in your going down, the night. For as one who is in the night no longer sees, while one who is in the day lives in the light, so in the going down, as in night, you saw nothing, but in coming up again you were as in day. And at the same moment you were dying and being born; and that saving water became both your grave and your mother. And what Solomon said of others would suit you; for there he said, "A time to give birth, and a time to die"; but for you it is the reverse, a time to die and a time to be born; and one time brought about both, and your birth coincided with your death.

O strange and paradoxical thing! We did not truly die, nor were we truly buried, nor were we truly crucified and raised; but the imitation is in an image, while the salvation is in reality. Christ was really crucified, and really buried, and truly rose; and all these things he has freely given to us, so that, sharing his sufferings by imitation, we may gain salvation in reality. O surpassing love for mankind! Christ received the nails in his undefiled hands and feet, and suffered pain; and to me, without pain or toil, he freely gives salvation through fellowship in his pain.

Let no one, then, suppose that baptism is the grace of forgiveness of sins only, and of adoption too, as the baptism of John conferred forgiveness of sins only. We know well that, as it cleanses from sins and procures the gift of the Holy Spirit, so it is also the antitype of the sufferings of Christ. For this reason Paul cried out just now and said: "Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death." He said these things to those disposed to think that baptism … procures forgiveness of sins and adoption …, but no longer has fellowship, by imitation, in the true sufferings of Christ. [7] So that we may learn, then, that whatever Christ endured for us and for our salvation, he suffered in reality and not in appearance, and that we become sharers in his sufferings, Paul cried with all exactness: "For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in that of his resurrection." And "planted together" is well said; for since the true vine was planted here, we too, by sharing in the baptism of death, have been planted together with him. Fix your mind with great attention on the words of the apostle. … he said, "For if we have been planted together in [his] death," but "in the likeness of his death." For in Christ's case … death, for his soul was truly separated from his body; and his burial was true, for his holy body was wrapped in clean linen; and everything happened truly in him. But in your case … a likeness of death and of sufferings; but of salvation not a likeness, …

Summary: Baptism not only forgives sins and gives adoption but is the antitype of Christ's sufferings: we share his death in likeness, while his death and burial were real.

  • Contains section 7, not separated in the scan. Many lines are garbled or lost in the scan (debris and a marginal cross-reference from Migne's notes stand in the text); words that cannot be read are marked …, and the section breaks off in mid-sentence. "Here": in Jerusalem, where Christ was buried. Quotations and allusions: Rom 6:3–5; John 15:1; Matt 27:59. Against the view that Christ suffered only in appearance (Docetism).

Having been baptized into Christ and having put on Christ, you have become conformed to the Son of God. For God, having predestined us to adoption, made us conformed to the body of Christ's glory. Having become partakers of Christ, then, you are fittingly called christs; and of you God said: "Touch not my christs." You have become christs by receiving the antitype of the Holy Spirit; and all things have been done to you in an image, since you are images of Christ. He, having washed in the river Jordan and imparted the touch of his Godhead to the waters, came up from them; and the Holy Spirit in his very being came upon him, like resting upon like. And to you likewise, when you had come up from the pool of the sacred streams, a chrism was given, the antitype of that with which Christ was anointed. This is the Holy Spirit; of whom the blessed Isaiah too, in his prophecy, said in the person of the Lord: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me; he has sent me to preach good news to the poor."

Notes and citation

Summary: The baptized are called "christs" (anointed ones) because the chrism they received after baptism is the antitype of the Holy Spirit with whom Christ was anointed at the Jordan.

  • "Christs": anointed ones; "chrism": the anointing with perfumed oil after baptism. "Antitype": the sign that corresponds to the reality. Quotations and allusions: Gal 3:27; Rom 8:29; Eph 1:5; Phil 3:21; Ps 105:15 (LXX 104:15); Matt 3:16; Isa 61:1.

For Christ was not anointed by men with oil or bodily ointment; but the Father, having appointed him Savior of the whole world, anointed him with the Holy Spirit, as Peter says: "Jesus of Nazareth, whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit"; and David the prophet cried, saying: "Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever; a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows." And as Christ was truly crucified, and buried, and raised, while you in baptism are counted worthy to be crucified, buried, and raised together with him in likeness, so it is with the chrism too. He was anointed with the spiritual oil of gladness, that is, with the Holy Spirit, who is called the oil of gladness because he is the cause of spiritual gladness; but you were anointed with ointment, having become sharers and fellows of Christ.

But beware of supposing that this ointment is mere ointment. For as the bread of the Eucharist after the invocation of the Holy Spirit is no longer plain bread but the body of Christ, so too this holy ointment is no longer mere ointment, nor, as one might say, common, after the invocation, but Christ's gift of grace, and by the presence of the Holy Spirit it becomes effective of his Godhead. It is applied symbolically to your forehead and your other organs of sense; and while the body is anointed with the visible ointment, the soul is sanctified by the holy and life-giving Spirit.

Notes and citation

Summary: After the invocation the chrism, like the eucharistic bread, is no longer ordinary: the body is anointed with the visible ointment, the soul sanctified by the Spirit.

  • The lecturer states that after the invocation of the Holy Spirit the eucharistic bread is "no longer plain bread but the body of Christ"; this is translated exactly. The clause on the Godhead is ambiguous; it may also be read "the gift of Christ and of the Holy Spirit, made effective by the presence of his Godhead".

And first you were anointed on the forehead, so that you might be freed from the shame which the first man, the transgressor, carried about everywhere, and so that with unveiled face you might reflect as in a mirror the glory of the Lord. Then on the ears, so that you might receive ears quick to hear the divine mysteries, of which Isaiah said, "And the Lord gave me an ear to hear," and the Lord Jesus in the Gospels, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Then on the nostrils, so that, perceiving the divine ointment, you may say: "We are the fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved." After this on the breast, so that, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, you may stand against the wiles of the devil. For as Christ after his baptism and the coming of the Holy Spirit went out and overcame the adversary, so you too, after holy baptism and the mystical chrism, clothed in the full armor of the Holy Spirit, stand against the hostile power and overcome it, saying: "I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me."

Having been counted worthy of this holy chrism, you are called Christians, making the name true by your new birth. For before you were counted worthy of this grace, you were not properly worthy of this title, but were advancing on the way toward being Christians. [6] You must know that the symbol of this chrism lies in the Old Testament. For when Moses imparted God's command to his brother and appointed him high priest, after bathing him in water he anointed him; and he was called "christ" (anointed), evidently from the chrism that was a figure. So too the high priest, bringing Solomon forward as king, anointed him after he had bathed in the Gihon. But these things happened to them in a figure, while to you they happened not in a figure but in truth; since you were truly anointed by the Holy Spirit. Christ is the beginning of your salvation; for he is truly the firstfruits, and you the lump; and if the firstfruits are holy, plainly the holiness will pass on to the lump.

Summary: The anointed are rightly called Christians; the chrism was prefigured in the anointing of Aaron and Solomon, but is now given in truth by the Holy Spirit.

Keep this unspotted; for it will teach you all things, if it abides in you, as you heard just now from the blessed John, who says much in his wisdom about this chrism. For this holy thing is a spiritual safeguard of the body and salvation of the soul. Of this the blessed Isaiah prophesied long ago, saying: "And the Lord will make for all nations on this mountain" (and elsewhere too he calls the Church a mountain, as when he says, "And in the last days the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest"), "they shall drink wine, they shall drink gladness, they shall be anointed with ointment." And to make you sure, hear what he says about this ointment as mystical: "Deliver all these things to the nations; for the counsel of the Lord is upon all the nations." Having been anointed, then, with this holy ointment, keep it unspotted and blameless in you, advancing by good works and becoming well-pleasing to the author of your salvation, Christ Jesus, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Chapter 22

22.1PG 33:1097a

Καὶ αὕτη τοῦ μακαρίου Παύλου ἡ διδασκαλία, ἱκανὴ καθέστηκε πληροφορῆσαι ὑμᾶς περὶ τῶν θείων μυστηρίων, ὧν καταξιωθέντες, σύσσωμοι καὶ σύναιμοι τοῦ Χριστοῦ γεγόνατε. Αὐτὸς γὰρ ἀρτίως ἐβόα· Ὅτι ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ ᾖ παρεδίδοτο ὁ Κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς, λαβὼν ἄρτον καὶ εὐχαριστήσας, ἔκλασε καὶ ἔδωκε τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ μαθηταῖς, λέγων· Λάβετε, φάγετε, τοῦτό μου ἐστὶ τὸ σῶμα. Καὶ λαβὼν τὸ ποτήριον καὶ εὐχαριστήσας, εἶπε· Λάβετε, πίετε, τοῦτό μου ἐστὶ τὸ αἷμα. Αὐτοῦ οὖν ἀποφηναμένου, καὶ εἰπόντος περὶ τοῦ ἄρτου, Τοῦτό μου ἐστὶ τὸ σῶμα· τίς τολμήσει ἀμφιβάλλειν λοιπόν; Καὶ αὐτοῦ βεβαιωσαμένου καὶ εἰρηκότος, Τοῦτό μου ἐστὶ τὸ αἷμα· τίς ἐνδοιάσει ποτε, λέγων μὴ εἶναι αὐτοῦ τὸ αἷμα;

This teaching of the blessed Paul is itself sufficient to give you full assurance about the divine mysteries; having been counted worthy of them, you have become of one body and one blood with Christ. For he cried just now: "that on the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, and having given thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body. And taking the cup and having given thanks, he said, Take, drink; this is my blood." Since, then, he himself declared and said of the bread, "This is my body," who will dare to doubt any longer? And since he himself affirmed and said, "This is my blood," who will ever hesitate, saying that it is not his blood?

In the Old Testament too there were loaves of the presence; but those, belonging to the Old Testament, have come to an end. In the New Testament there is the bread of heaven and the cup of salvation, sanctifying soul and body. For as bread corresponds to the body, so the Word is suited to the soul. [6] … [bread and] wine; for they are the body and blood of Christ according to the Lord's declaration. For even if sense suggests this to you, let faith make you firm. Do not judge the matter by the taste, but be fully assured by faith, without doubting, that you have been counted worthy of the body and blood of Christ.

And the blessed David will tell you the meaning of this, saying: "You have prepared a table before me, in the presence of those who afflict me." What he says is this: Before your coming the demons prepared for men a table, polluted and defiled and full of devilish power; but since your coming, O Master, you have prepared a table before me. When a man says to God, "You have prepared a table before me," what else does he mean but the mystical and spiritual table which God has prepared for us "in the presence of", that is, opposite and in opposition to, the demons? And very fittingly; for that table had fellowship with demons, but this one has fellowship with God. "You have anointed my head with oil." He anointed your head with oil, on your forehead, for the seal of God which you have, so that you may become the engraving of the seal, "holiness to God." "And your cup that inebriates me, how excellent it is." You see here the cup spoken of, which Jesus took in his hands, and having given thanks said: "This is my blood, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

For this reason Solomon too, hinting at this grace, says in Ecclesiastes: "Come, eat your bread with gladness" (the spiritual bread; "Come" is the call he gives, the saving and blessed call), "and drink your wine with a good heart" (the spiritual wine), "and let oil be poured on your head" (do you see him hinting at the mystical chrism too?), "and let your garments be always white, for the Lord has been pleased with your works." For before you came to the grace, your works were vanity of vanities. But having put off your old garments and put on those that are spiritually white, you must be clothed in white always. We do not at all mean that you must always wear white clothes; but you must be clothed in garments truly white and shining [and spiritual], so that you may say with the blessed Isaiah: "Let my soul rejoice in the Lord; for he has clothed me with the garment of salvation, and put on me the robe of gladness."
