4. There was among them one Josephus — not that ancient writer and historian, but the one from Tiberias, in the times of the late Emperor Constantine the elder — who received from the emperor himself the rank of count and obtained authority to build a church to Christ in Tiberias itself, and in Diocaesarea, Capernaum, and the other towns. He suffered much at the hands of the Jews themselves before he was presented to the emperor.

Josephus also related something plausible and yet laughable, but I think perhaps he was telling the truth <in this> too. For he said that when his wife had died, he was afraid that the Arians might seize him and make him a cleric (for they had often flattered him, promising greater advancement, even to make him a bishop if need be, if he were persuaded to join the heresy) — and he said that for this reason he had married a second wife, in order to escape their ordinations.
1 Tim 3:2 (allusion, low confidence)
Notes and citation
Summary: Josephus remarried to avoid ordination by the Arians.
- Epiphanius himself finds the story amusing but credible. A second marriage barred a man from clerical office under the church's discipline (cf. 1 Tim 3:2).

For having cut off the genealogies in Matthew, they make their beginning, as we said before, saying: “It came to pass,” it says, “in the days of Herod king of Judaea, when Caiaphas was high priest, that there came one John by name, baptizing with a baptism of repentance in the river Jordan,” and so on.

Again, they deny that he is a man, supposedly from the saying the Saviour spoke when it was announced to him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers are standing outside”: “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers? And stretching out his hand toward the disciples he said, These are my brothers and mother and sisters, who do the will of my Father.”

as Clement himself refutes them on every point from the encyclical letters he wrote, which are read in the holy churches, since his faith and teaching have a different character from what they have falsified in his name in the Circuits. For he teaches virginity, and they do not accept it; he praises Elijah and David and Samson and all the prophets, whom these abhor.
Notes and citation
Summary: Clement's genuine letters contradict the Ebionite forgeries.

So in the Circuits they have transferred everything to their own views, lying against Peter in many ways: that he was baptized daily for purification, as they are; and they say that he abstained from living things and meat, as they do, and from every other food made from flesh, since Ebion himself and the Ebionites abstain from these entirely.
