First, then, since they are accustomed to gather the more favorable sayings about themselves and to recite them by heart, let us set against them the proofs about the nations from the prophecies themselves, showing that countless predictions foretold good and saving things for all the nations, and that they said the promises to the nations would be fulfilled in no other way than through the coming of Christ alone.

Notes and citation

Summary: Eusebius will set against Jewish proof-texts the many prophecies promising salvation to the nations through Christ.

If we stopped the argument there, we would have shown that the expectation of the Christ of God should be said to belong no more to them than to us. But when the hope of the promises has been shown to be equal for Jews and Greeks, so that in this respect those from the nations who will be saved through Christ fall in no way short of those of the circumcision, we shall go further and prove, over and above, that the divine oracles foretell, at the coming of Christ and the calling of the nations, the complete falling away and rejection of the whole Jewish nation, prophesying better things for only a few of them, easily counted; and that they show that their city will be captured, temple and all, and all their sacred things destroyed, which has plainly come to pass in fact.

Notes and citation

Summary: Eusebius will show that the promises are equal for Jews and Greeks, and further that the prophets foretold Israel’s rejection, apart from a remnant, and the fall of Jerusalem.

  • αὐτῷ ἱερῷ is read as “temple and all” (αὐτῷ τῷ ἱερῷ). Eusebius’s polemical thesis is translated as written.

How the sacred words prophesy together and at the same time, at the coming of Christ, both redemption from evils and enjoyment of good things for Israel, and on the other hand deprivation of good things and falling away from the worship of God, we shall explain at the proper time. Meanwhile let us go to the first point, selecting a few out of countless prophecies to prove what has been said.

Notes and citation

Summary: Eusebius will later explain how the prophecies foretell both redemption and rejection for Israel.

Since, then, they are accustomed to put forward to us the more favorable prophecies about themselves, as though what was foretold had been promised to them alone, it is time for us too to bring forward and set against them the promises about the nations, which are found as follows in their prophets. 1. From Genesis. That the nations of the earth will be blessed in the same manner as Abraham’s name.

“And the Lord said, I will not hide from Abraham my servant what I am doing. Abraham shall become a great and numerous nation, and in him all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” The oracle says he will not hide a secret mystery unknown to the many, but will reveal it to the God-beloved man. This was the blessing of all the nations, which was hidden long ago because in Abraham’s time all the nations were held fast by unspeakable error and superstition; but now in our time it has come to light, when, through our Savior’s gospel teaching, whoever worships God in the same manner as Abraham shares in a blessing equal to his.

That it was not possible for all the nations to live according to the legislation of Moses we have discussed most fully in the preceding book, so that no one should suppose the oracle was spoken about the proselytes among the Jews.

You would find for yourself countless other passages scattered through all the prophets in promises to the nations, which there is no occasion now either to collect or to interpret; but those set out are enough to establish the point at hand.

The point was to show those of the circumcision, who boast greatly of themselves and take pride in God’s having preferred them alone to the other nations and counted them alone worthy of the divine promises, that nothing better than all the others has been promised to them specially in the divine pledges. Since, then, the nations have been shown to be counted worthy of the divine promises, come, let us now see that through which the nations are said to attain God’s calling and the divine promises; for it is good to see also the cause said to procure good things for the nations.

Notes and citation

Summary: Having shown that the nations share the promises, Eusebius turns to their cause.

What would this be but the coming of Christ, through whom those of the circumcision also acknowledge that their own redemption will come? We must show, then, that the expectation of the calling of the nations too was nothing other than the Christ of God himself, who would appear as Savior not only to the Jews but to all the nations. For now I will use bare testimonies of the prophets without any interpretation, intending to interpret each one at length at leisure, when, with God, having collected all the predictions about the nations together, I come to interpret them.

Notes and citation

Summary: The cause is Christ’s coming; Eusebius will list bare testimonies now and interpret them later.

Their own oracles, at any rate, expressly foretell that there would be a falling away and rejection of the Jewish nation because of their unbelief in Christ, so that we appear no longer equal to them, but even superior, over and above. Here too I will use bare citations of the prophets without any study of them, both because of their clarity and because I intend to make a very full examination of them at leisure. 24. From Jeremiah. Declaration of the rejection of the Jewish nation, and of the adoption of the nations in their place.

29. From Malachi. Rejection of the Jewish nation and refusal of their bodily worship according to the law of Moses, [and acceptance] of the spiritual worship handed down through Christ to all the nations. “I have no pleasure in you, says the Almighty, and I will not accept sacrifice from your hands. For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name has been glorified among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure sacrifice. For my name is great among the nations, says the Lord Almighty, but you profane it.” 30. From Isaiah. The falling away of the Jewish nation, and the manifestation of the word of God, of a new law, and of his house, and declaration of the piety of all the nations.
