But when their legislation became celebrated and spread like a fragrant breath among all men, then already from them the minds of most of the nations too had been tamed through lawgivers and philosophers everywhere, their wild and cruel savagery changed to gentleness, so that they enjoyed deep peace and friendship and intercourse with one another. At that time, then, to all the rest of mankind and to the nations throughout the world, as to people already helped and now fit to receive the knowledge of the Father, that same one again, the teacher of things unspeakable, the minister of the Father in all good things, the divine and heavenly Word of God, appeared at the beginning of the Roman Empire through a man in no way different from our nature in bodily substance, and did and suffered such things as agreed with the prophecies. For these proclaimed beforehand that one who was at once man and God would come to dwell in life as a doer of wonderful works, and would be shown to all nations as a teacher of reverence for the Father; and they foretold the wonder of his birth, his new teaching, and the marvels of his works, and besides these the manner of his death, his resurrection from the dead, and, above all, his divine restoration to heaven.
