πάλαι μὲν ἡμῖν τὰς παραδόξους θεοσημίας καὶ τόν τοῦ κυρίου θαυμάτων τὰς εἰς ἀνθρώπους εὐεργεσίας διὰ θείων ἀναγνωσμάτων ἀκοῇ παραδεχομένοις ὕμνους εἰς θεὸν καὶ ᾠδὰς ἀναπέμπειν ἐξῆν, λέγειν παιδευομένοις “ὁ θεὸς, ἐν τοῖς ὠσὶν ἡμῶν ἠκούσαμεν, οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἀνήγγειλαν ἡμῖν ἔργον ὅ εἰργάσω ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῶν, ἐν ἡμέραις ἀρχαίαις.’’

Long ago, when we received by hearing through the divine readings the extraordinary signs of God and the benefits of the Lord's wonders toward men, it was ours to send up hymns and songs to God, being taught to say: “O God, we have heard with our ears; our fathers have told us the work that you did in their days, in the days of old.”
