Church History 10.5.22
Summary: Because some rejected the Roman judgment as hasty and made by too few, causing scandal, Constantine resolved to end the dispute before a larger gathering.
English · Claude translation
But since, as happens, some, forgetting both their own salvation and the reverence owed to the most holy faith, even now do not cease to prolong their own enmities, not wishing to accept the judgment already given, and asserting that only a few gave their opinions and decisions, or that they hastened very quickly and sharply to give judgment before everything that ought to have been inquired into had been accurately examined; and since from all this it comes about that those very people who ought to have brotherly and harmonious unity of soul are shamefully, or rather abominably, separated from one another, and give occasion for mockery to men whose souls are strangers to this most holy religion, it became my concern to provide that this matter, which ought to have ceased by voluntary agreement after the judgment already given, might now at last be brought to an end in the presence of many.
