μόνῃ γὰρ αὐτῷ χρωμένῳ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τὸν πρὸ τούτου χρόνον, καὶ τὸν οὐ συμπαθείας ἄξιον ἐλεοῦντι, τῷ μὲν οὐδὲν ἐγίνετο πλέον, τῆς κακίας οὐκ ἀπαλλαττομένῳ, αὔξοντι δὲ μᾶλλον τὴν κατὰ τῶν ὑποχειρίων ἐθνῶν λύτταν, τοῖς δὲ κακουμένοις οὔτις ἐλείπετο σωτηρίας ἐλπὶς, ὑπὸ δεινῷ θηρίῳ καταπονουμένοις.

English · Claude translation

For when he had used humanity alone in the time before this and had pitied one unworthy of sympathy, it did the man no good, since he did not give up his wickedness but rather increased his fury against the nations under him, while for the oppressed no hope of salvation was left, being crushed by a terrible wild beast.
