πρῶτον μὲν οὑν ὑπʼ αὐτῶν Ἰωνάθην τὸν ἀρχιερέα κατασφαγῆναι, μετὰ δʼ αὐτὸν καθʼ ἡμέραν ἀναιρεῖσθαι πολλοὺς, καὶ τῶν συμφορῶν τὸν φόβον εἷναι χαλεπώτερον, ἑκάστου καθάπερ ἐν πολέμῳ καθʼ ὥραν τὸν θάνατον προσδεχομένου.”

First Jonathan the high priest was slaughtered by them, and after him many were killed every day, and the fear was worse than the calamities, since each man, as in war, expected death every hour.”
