παρακληθέντα δὴ οὖν τούτων ἕνεκά φασι τὸν ἀπόστολον Ἰωάννην τὸν ὑπὸ τῶν προτέρων εὐαγγελιστῶν παρασιωπηθέντα χρόνον καὶ τὰ κατὰ τοῦτον πεπραγμένα τῷ σωτῆρι (ταῦτα δʼ ἦν τὰ πρὸ τῆς τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ καθείρξεως) τῷ κατʼ αὐτὸν εὐαγγελίῳ παραδοῦναι, αὐτό τε τοῦτʼ ἐπισημήνασθαι, τοτὲ μὲν φήσαντα ‘ταύτην ἀρχὴν ἐποίησε τῶν παραδόξων ὁ Ἰησοῦς, ” τοτὲ δὲ μνημονεύσαντα τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ μεταξὺ τῶν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ πράξεων, ὡς ἔτι τότε βαπτίζοντος ἐν Αἰνῶν ἐγγὺς τοῦ Σαλεὶμ, σαφῶς τε τοῦτο δηλοῦν ἐν τῷ λέγειν “οὔπω γὰρ ἦν, φησὶν, Ἰωάννης βεβλημένος “φυλακήν.

They say, then, that for this reason the apostle John was urged to hand down in his Gospel the period passed over in silence by the earlier evangelists and what the Saviour did in it (these were the events before the Baptist's imprisonment), and that he indicated this very thing, at one time saying, “This beginning of his wonders Jesus did,” and at another mentioning the Baptist in the midst of Jesus' acts as still baptizing at Aenon near Salim, and showing it clearly when he says, “For John had not yet been thrown into prison.”
