τοῖς δʼ ἐπὶ ‘Ρωμαίων φρουρὰν νύ- “κτωρ ἐξερπύσασιν ἐπὶ λαχάνων συλλογὴν ἀγρίων καὶ πόας ὑπαντῶντες, ὅτʼ ἤδη διαπεφευγέναι τοὺς “πολεμίους ἐδόκουν, ἀφήρπαζον τὰ κομισθέντα, καὶ “πολλάκις ἱκετευόντων, καὶ τὸ φρικτότατον ἐπικαλου- ‘μένων ὄνομα τοῦ θεοῦ, μεταδοῦναί τι μέρος αὐτοῖς ῾ ὧν κινδυνεύσαντες ἤνεγκαν, οὐδʼ ὁτιοῦν μετέδοσαν. ‘ἀγαπητὸν δʼ ἦν τὸ μὴ καὶ προσαπολέσθαι σεσυλημένον.”

English · Claude translation

And those who crept out by night toward the Roman guard to gather wild herbs and grass they met when they thought they had already escaped the enemy, and snatched away what they had brought; and often, when they begged, and called on the most awesome name of God, to be given some part of what they had risked their lives to bring, they gave them nothing at all. It was a mercy not to be killed as well as robbed.”
