οὔτε δὲ θρῆνος ἐν ταῖς συμ- φοραῖς οὔτε ὀλοφυρμὸς ἠν, ἀλλʼ ὁ λιμὸς ἤλεγχε τὰ πάθη. ξηροῖς δὲ τοῖς ὄμμασιν οἶ δυσθανατοῦν- “τες ἐφεώρων τοὺς φθάσαντας ἀναπαύσασθαι. βα- “θεῖα δὲ τὴν πόλιν περιεῖχε σιγὴ, καὶ νὺξ θανάτου γέμουσα. καὶ τούτων οἱ λῃσταὶ χαλεπώτεροι.

English · Claude translation

There was neither weeping nor lamentation in these calamities, but famine confounded the affections. With dry eyes those who were dying slowly looked on those who had gone to their rest before them. A deep silence and a night full of death enveloped the city. And the brigands were worse than these things.
