ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὺς ἐμπνέοντας οἶ λῃσταὶ διηρεύνων, μή τις ὑπὸ κόλπον ἔχων τροφὴν σκήπτοιτο τὸν θάνατον αὐτοῦ. οἱ δʼ ὑπʼ ἐνδείας κεχηνότες ὥσπερ λυσσῶντες κύνες ἐφήλλοντο καὶ παρεφέροντο, ταῖς τε θύραις ἐνσειόμενοι μεθυόντων τρόπον καὶ ὑπʼ ἀμηχανίας εἰς τοὺς αὐτοὺς οἴκους εἰσεπήδων δὶς ἢ τρὶς ὥρᾳ μιᾷ.

But the brigands searched even those still breathing, lest anyone should have food hidden in his bosom and be feigning death. Others, gaping with want, like mad dogs, leaped about and staggered, beating against the doors like drunken men, and in their helplessness rushed into the same houses two or three times in one hour.
