τοὺς δʼ εὐθέως “φρίκη καὶ φρενῶν ἔκστασις ᾕρει, καὶ παρὰ τὴν ὄψιν ἐπεπήγεσαν. ἡ δὲ, ἐμὸν, ἔφη, τοῦτο τὸ τέκνον γνή- ‘σιον, καὶ τὸ ἔργον ἐμόν. φάγετε, καὶ γὰρ ἐγὼ βέ- ‘βρωκα. μὴ γένησθε μήτε μαλακώτεροι γυναικὸς μήτε συμπαθέστεροι μητρός. εἰ δʼ ὑμεῖς εὐσεβεῖς καὶ τὴν ἐμὴν ἀποστρέφεσθε θυσίαν, ἐγὼ μὲν ὑμῖν βέβρωκα, καὶ τὸ λοιπὸν δʼ ἐμοὶ μεινάτω.

English · Claude translation

Horror and bewilderment seized them at once, and they stood transfixed at the sight. But she said, ‘This is my own child, and the deed is mine. Eat, for I too have eaten. Do not be softer than a woman or more compassionate than a mother. But if you are pious and turn away from my sacrifice, I have eaten for you, and let the rest remain for me.’
