μετὰ δὲ τὴν ἑορτὴν ἡμέραις οὐ πολλαῖς ὕστερον, “μιᾷ καὶ εἰκάδι Ἀρτεμισίου μηνὸς, φάσμα τι δαιμόνιον “ ὤφθη μεῖζον πίστεως. τέρας δʼ ἂν ἔδοξεν εἶναι τὸ “ ῥηθησόμενον, εἰ μὴ καὶ παρὰ τοῖς θεασαμένοις ἱστό- “ρητο καὶ τὰ ἐπακολουθήσαντα πάθη τῶν σημείων “ἦν ἄξια. πρὸ γὰρ ἡλίου δύσεως ὤφθη μετέωρα πᾶσαν τὴν χώραν ἅρματα καὶ φάλαγγες ἔνοπλοι διᾴτ- “τουσαι τῶν νεφῶν καὶ κυκλούμεναι τὰς πόλεις.

English · Claude translation

Not many days after the feast, on the twenty-first of the month Artemisius, a certain supernatural apparition was seen, beyond belief. What is to be told would have seemed a marvel, if it had not been related by those who saw it, and if the sufferings that followed had not been worthy of the signs. For before sunset chariots and armed battalions were seen in the air all over the country, speeding through the clouds and encircling the cities.
