Of Theophilus, whom we have shown to be bishop of the church of the Antiochenes, three elementary works To Autolycus are extant, and another entitled Against the Heresy of Hermogenes, in which he uses testimonies from the Apocalypse of John, and certain other catechetical books of his. And since the heretics then too, no less, like tares, were ravaging the pure seed of apostolic teaching, the shepherds of the churches everywhere, as though driving away wild beasts from Christ's sheep, kept them off, at one time by admonitions and exhortations to the brothers, at another by stripping more openly for the contest against them, in unwritten inquiries and refutations face to face, and also by correcting their opinions with most exact refutations in written memoirs. Theophilus, at any rate, having campaigned against them with the others, is shown to have done so by a not ignoble treatise of his against Marcion, which, with the others we have mentioned, is still preserved even now. He was succeeded, seventh from the apostles, in the church of the Antiochenes by Maximinus.
