οἶ μὲν γὰρ ἱλαροὶ προῄεσαν, “δόξης καὶ χάριτος πολλῆς ταῖς ὄψεσιν αὐτῶν συγκε- “κραμένης, ὥστε καὶ τὰ δεσμὰ κόσμον εὐπρεπῆ πε- “ρικεῖσθαι αὐτοῖς, ὡς νύμφῃ κεκοσμημένῃ ἐν “σωτοῖς χρυσοῖς πεποικιλμένοις, τὴν εὐωδίαν ὀδω- “δότες ἅμα τὴν Χριστοῦ, ὥστε ἐνίους δόξαι καὶ μύρῳ “κοσμικῷ κεχρῖσθαι αὐτούς· οἶ δὲ κατηφεῖς καὶ τα- “πεινοὶ καὶ δυσειδεῖς καὶ πάσης ἀσχημοσύνης ἀνά- “πλεοι, προσέτι δὲ καὶ ὑπὸ τῶν ἐθνῶν ὀνειδιζόμε- “νοι ὡς ἀγεννεῖς καὶ ἄνανδροι, ἀνδροφόνων μὲν ἐγ- “κλήματα ἔχοντες, ἀπολωλεκότες δὲ τὴν πάντιμον “καὶ ἔνδοξον καὶ ζωοποιὸν προσηγορίαν. ταῦτα δὲ “οἱ λοιποὶ θεωροῦντες ἐστηρίχθησαν, καὶ οἱ συλλαμ- “ βανόμενοι ἀδιστάκτως ὡμολόγουν, μηδὲ ἔννοιαν “ἔχοντες διαβολικοῦ λογισμοῦ.”

The former went out joyful, glory and much grace mingled in their faces, so that even their chains lay upon them like a becoming ornament, as on a bride adorned with embroidered golden fringes, and they breathed at the same time the fragrance of Christ, so that some thought they had been anointed with worldly perfume. The latter were downcast, humbled, unsightly, and full of every disgrace, and were besides reproached by the Gentiles as ignoble and cowardly, bearing the charge of murderers and having lost the all-honourable, glorious, and life-giving name. When the rest saw this they were strengthened, and those who were arrested confessed without hesitation, not even giving a thought to the devil's reasoning.”
