καὶ γὰρ τοὺς ἐναποπνιγέντας ἐν τῇ εἱρκτῇ παρέβαλλον “κυσὶν, ἐπιμελῶς παραφυλάσσοντες νύκτωρ “καὶ μεθʼ ἡμέραν, μὴ κηδευθῇ τις ὑφʼ ἡμῶν, καὶ “τότε δὴ προθέντες τά τε τῶν θηρίων τά τε τοῦ “πυρὸς λείψανα, τῇ μὲν ἐσπαραγμένα, πῆ δὲ ἠν— “θρακευμἐνα, καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν τὰς κεφαλὰς σὺν τοῖς “ἀποτμήμασιν αὐτῶν ὡσαύτως ἀτάφους παρεφύλαττον “μετὰ στρατιωτικῆς ἐπιμελείας ἡμέραις συχναῖς. “

English · Claude translation

For they threw those who had been suffocated in the prison to the dogs, keeping careful watch night and day that none should be buried by us. Then they exposed the remains left by the beasts and by the fire, some torn to pieces, some charred, and the heads of the rest together with their trunks, and likewise guarded them unburied with military care for many days.
