ἐν ᾗ γε μὴν προειρήκαμεν πρὸς τὸν Φλωρῖνον ὁ Εἰρηναῖος ἐπιστολῇ αὖθις τῆς ἅμα Πολυκάρπῳ συνουσίας αὐτοῦ μνημονεύει λέγων “ταῦτα τὰ δόγματα, “Φλωρῖνε, ἵνα πεφεισμένως εἴπω, οὐκ ἔστιν ὑγιοῦς “γνώμης· ταῦτα τὰ δόγματα ἀσύμφωνά ἐστι τῇ ἐκ- “κλησίᾳ, εἰς τὴν μεγίστην ἀσέβειαν περιβάλλοντα “τοὺς πειθομένους αὐτοῖς· ταῦτα τὰ δόγματα οὐδὲ “οἱ ἔξω τῆς ἐκκλησίας αἱρετικοὶ ἐτόλμησαν ἀποφή- “νασθαί ποτε· ταῦτα τὰ δόγματα οἱ πρὸ ἡμῶν πρεσ- “βύτεροι οἱ καὶ τοῖς ἀποστόλοις συμφοιτήσαντες οὐ “παρέδωκάν σοι.

In the letter to Florinus which we mentioned, Irenaeus again mentions his association with Polycarp, saying: “These doctrines, Florinus, to speak mildly, are not of sound judgment; these doctrines are not in harmony with the church and involve those who follow them in the greatest impiety; these doctrines not even the heretics outside the church ever dared to declare; these doctrines the presbyters before us, who also were companions of the apostles, did not hand down to you.
