“τοῖς μὲν ἄλλοις ἀνθρώποις οὐκ ἂν δόξειε “καιρὸς ἑορτῆς εἶναι τὰ παρόντα. οὐδʼ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς “οὔτε οὗτος οὔτε τις ἕτερος, οὐχ ὅπως τῶν ἐπιλύπων, ῾ἀλλʼ οὐδʼ εἴ τις περιχαρὴς, ὃν οἰηθεῖεν μάλιστα. “νῦν μέν γε θρῆνοι πάντα, καὶ πενθοῦσι πάντες, καὶ περιηχοῦσιν οἰμωγαὶ τὴν πόλιν διὰ τὸ πλῆθος ῾τῶν τεθνηκότων καὶ τῶν ἀποθνησκόντων ὁσημέραι. “

“To other men the present would not seem a time for festival. Nor is this or any other time a festival for them — not only the sorrowful times, but not even any time they might think especially joyful. Now indeed all things are lamentations, and all mourn, and wailings resound through the city because of the multitude of those who have died and are dying every day.
