ἔνθα καὶ τὸ εὐσταθὲς “καὶ τὸ φιλάληθες καὶ τὸ εὐπαρακολούθητον καὶ “συνετὸν ὑπερηγάσθην τῶν ἀδελφῶν, ὡς ἐν τάξει “καὶ μετʼ ἐπιεικείας τὰς ἐρωτήσεις καὶ τὰς ἐπαπορή- “σεις καὶ τὰς συγκαταθέσεις ἐποιούμεθα, τὸ μὲν ἐκ “παντὸς τρόπου φιλονείκως τῶν ἅπαξ δοξάντων πε- “ριέχεσθαι, εἰ καὶ μὴ φαίνοιντο ὀρθῶς ἔχοντα, παρ- “αιτησάμενοι, μήτε δὲ τὰς ἀντιλογίας ὑποστελλόμενοι, “ἀλλʼ εἰς ὅσον οἷόν τε τῶν προκειμένων ἐπιβατεύειν “καὶ κρατύνειν αὐτὰ πειρώμενοι, μήτε, εἰ λόγος αἱ- “ρεῖ, μεταπείθεσθαι καὶ συνομολογεῖν αἰδούμενοι, “ἀλλʼ εὐσυνειδήτως καὶ ἀνυποκρίτως καὶ ταῖς καρ- “δίαις πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ἡπλωμέναις τὰ ταῖς ἀποδείξεσι ‘καὶ διδασκαλίαις τῶν ἁγίων γραφῶν “καταδεχόμενοι.

There I greatly admired the steadiness, love of truth, readiness to follow, and intelligence of the brothers, as we put the questions, difficulties, and agreements in order and with forbearance. We refused to cling contentiously at all costs to opinions once held, if they did not appear correct; we did not evade objections, but as far as possible tried to go into and establish the matters in hand; nor were we ashamed, if reason convinced us, to change our minds and agree, but conscientiously and without pretence, with hearts spread open to God, we accepted what was established by the proofs and teachings of the holy Scriptures.
