English · Claude translation

Then he also writes a letter: ‘John to the seven churches in Asia, grace to you and peace.’ But the evangelist did not prefix his name even to the catholic letter, but began without superfluity from the very mystery of the divine revelation: ‘That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes.’ For on account of this revelation the Lord also blessed Peter, saying, ‘Blessed are you, Simon bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but my heavenly Father.’

Notes

Translation notes

  • Quotation from Dionysius of Alexandria, citing Rev 1:4, 1 John 1:1, and Matt 16:17. The digital text repeats ἡμῶν and ὅτι, and the word “evangelist” is partly lost.

Notes on the original text

  • Digital text corrected (repeated word in the digital text): ἡμῶν.’ ἡμῶν. → ἡμῶν.’; ὅτι ὅτι σὰρξ → ὅτι σὰρξ.
