τούτων οὕτως ἐχόντων οἱ “μὲν ἐναπέθνησκον ταῖς βασάνοις, τῇ καρτερίᾳ κα- “ταισχύναντες τὸν ἀντίπαλον, οἶ δὲ ἡμιθνῆτες ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ συγκλειόμενοι μετʼ οὐ πολλὰς ἡμέρας ταῖς ἀλγηδόσι συνεχόμενοι ἐτελειοῦντο, οἶ δὲ λοιποὶ τῆς ἀπὸ τῆς θεραπείας ἀνακτήσεως τυχόντες τῷ ῾χρόνῳ καὶ τῇ τῆς φυλακῆς διατριβῇ θαρσαλεώτεροι ἐγίνοντο.

“This being so, some died under the tortures, putting the adversary to shame by their endurance; others, shut up half dead in the prison, were perfected after a few days, overcome by their pains; while the rest, recovering through treatment, grew bolder with time and their stay in prison.
