ἀσπίδων ἐπὶ τούτοις καὶ θωράκων παρασκευαὶ, βελῶν τε καὶ δοράτων καὶ τῆς ἄλλης πολεμικῆς παρατάξεως ἑτοιμασίαι, τριήρων τε καὶ τῶν κατὰ ναυμαχίαν ὅπλων, κατὰ πάντα συνεκροτοῦντο τόπον, οὐδʼ ἦν ἄλλο τι παντί τῳ προσδοκᾶν ἢ πολεμίων κατὰ πᾶσαν ἔφοδον ἡμέραν. τούτοις καὶ ὁ μετὰ ταῦτα λιμός τε καὶ λοιμὸς ἐγκατασκήπτει, περὶ ὧν κατὰ καιρὸν ἱστορήσομεν τὰ δέοντα.

English · Claude translation

Besides this, preparations of shields and breastplates, provisions of arrows and spears and all other warlike equipment, of triremes and arms for sea battles, were being assembled everywhere, and no one could expect anything but an attack of enemies every day. After this famine and plague also fell upon them, about which we shall relate what is needed at the proper time.
