καὶ ἡ μὲν πρώτη καθʼ ἡμῶν γραφὴ τοιαύτη τις ἦν· μετʼ οὐ πολὺ δὲ ἑτέρων ἐπιφοιτησάντων γραμμάτων προσετάττετο τοὺς τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν προέδρους πάντας τοὺς κατὰ πάντα τόπον πρῶτα μὲν δεσμοῖς παραδίδοσθαι, εἶθʼ ὕστερον πάσῃ μηχανῇ θύειν ἐξαναγκάζεσθαι.

Such was the first decree against us. But not long after, other letters arrived, commanding that all the presidents of the churches in every place should first be put in chains, and afterward be compelled by every means to sacrifice.
