Ποταπαί, φημί, κύριε, εἰσὶν αἱ πονηρίαι, ἀφʼ ὧν ἡμᾶς δεῖ ἐγκρατεύεσθαι; Ἄκουε, φησίν· ἀπὸ μοιχείας καὶ πορνείας, ἀπὸ μεθύσματος ἀνομίας, ἀπὸ τρυφῆς πονηρᾶς, ἀπὸ ἐδεσμάτων πολλῶν καὶ πολυτελείας πλούτου καὶ καυχήσεως καὶ ὑψηλοφροσύνης καὶ ὑπερηφανίας καὶ ἀπὸ ψεύσματος καὶ καταλαλιᾶς καὶ ὑποκρίσεως, μνησικακίας καὶ πάσης βλασφημίας.

“What kinds of evil, sir,” I said, “are those from which we must refrain?” “Hear,” he said: “from adultery and sexual immorality, from lawless drunkenness, from wicked luxury, from much food and extravagance of wealth, and boasting and haughtiness and arrogance, and from lying and slander and hypocrisy, rancor and every blasphemy.
