Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: An initiate who revealed these deeds would be counted worse than a beast.

Εἰ γὰρ ἐξείποι τινὶ ἀνθρώπων τὸ τοιοῦτον ἀνόμημα, οὔτε ἐν ἀνθρώποις λογισθήσεται οὔτε τὸ φῶς ὁρᾶν ἄξιος ἡγηθήσεται, εἰ καὶ ἄλογα ὄντα τοιοῦτον ἀνόμημα οὐκ ἐπιχειρεῖ, καθὼς ἐν τοῖς τόποις γενόμενοι ἐροῦμεν.

For if he should tell any man of such a lawless deed, he would neither be counted among men nor be thought worthy to see the light, since not even irrational animals attempt such a lawless deed, as we shall say when we come to the places concerned.
