Refutation of All Heresies 10.31.1

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Hippolytus will show that the nations devoted to philosophy descend from later settlers.

English · Claude translation

But since it seems not unreasonable to show that these nations occupied with wisdom are later than those who worshipped God, it is reasonable to say also from where their race came and when they migrated to these lands, not taking their name from the lands themselves, but having themselves given names from those who first ruled and settled there.
