Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Δύναται μὲν γὰρ καὶ ἅμα νοήματι τοῦτο συμβαίνειν, ὥσπερ καὶ τὸ προσαχθὲν τοῖς διαπύροις τῶν κλιβάνων στέαρ εὐθὺς καλλᾶται, δύναται δὲ καὶ μετὰ χρόνον. Διαστήματος γὰρ ὄντος ἀπὸ τοῦ στόματος τῆς μήτρας μέχρι τοῦ πυθμένος, ἔνθα καὶ τὰς συλλήψεις λέγουσι γίνεσθαι ἰατροί, πάντως ἐν χρόνῳ τινὶ τὸ διάστημα τοῦτο ἀνύειν πέφυκεν ἡ καταβαλλομένη τοῦ σπέρματος φύσις.

For this can happen as quick as thought, just as fat put on the red-hot sides of ovens at once sticks; but it can also happen after a time.
