Refutation of All Heresies 4.32.2

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

These things, then, are played thus. I shall set out other things which those who are played upon also think great. Setting a cauldron full of pitch on burning coals, when it boils, they put their hands in and are not burned; and walking on coals of fire with bare feet they are not burned; and placing a stone pyramid on a pyre he makes it burn; and he brings much fiery smoke out of his mouth; then, putting a linen cloth over a basin of water and throwing many burning coals on it, he keeps the cloth unburned.
