Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Ταύτην τὴν ἑβδομάδα Σίμων καὶ Οὐαλεντῖνος ὀνόμασιν ἐνδιαλλάξαντες ἐτερατολόγησαν, ὑπόθεσιν ἑαυτοῖς ἐντεῦθεν σχεδιάσαντες. Ὁ μὲν γὰρ Σίμων οὕτως καλεῖ· νοῦς, ἐπίνοια, ὄνομα, φωνή, λογισμός, ἐνθύμησις, ὁ ἑστώς, στάς, στησόμενος, καὶ Οὐαλεντῖνος· νοῦς, ἀλήθεια, λόγος, ζωή, ἄνθρωπος, ἐκκλησία καὶ ὁ πατὴρ συναριθμούμενος, κατὰ ταὐτὰ τοῖς τὴν ἀριθμητικὴν ἠσκηκόσι φιλοσοφίαν, [ἣν] ὡς ἄγνωστον [τοῖς] πολλοῖς θαυμάσαντες καὶ κατακολουθήσαντες τὰς ὑπʼ αὐτῶν ἐπινοηθείσας αἱρέσεις συνεστήσαντο.

This hebdomad Simon and Valentinus, changing the names, turned into marvels, improvising a system for themselves from it. For Simon names them thus: Mind, Thought, Name, Voice, Reasoning, Reflection, He who stood, stands, and will stand; and Valentinus: Mind, Truth, Word, Life, Man, Church, and the Father counted with them; in the same way as those who practiced arithmetical philosophy, [which] they admired as unknown [to] the many, and following it put together the heresies they devised.
