Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Justin requires an oath of secrecy, citing Paul's “what eye has not seen” and the Lord's oath in the Psalm.

Ὄμνυε δέ, φησὶν Ἰουστῖνος, εἰ γνῶναι θέλεις, ἃ ὀφθαλμὸς οὐκ εἶδε καὶ οὗς οὐκ ἤκουσεν, οὐδὲ ἐπὶ καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου ἀνέβη, τὸν ἐπάνω πάντων ἀγαθόν, τὸν ἀνώτερον, ἄρρητα φυλάξαι τὰ τῆς διδασκαλίας σιγώμενα· καὶ γὰρ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν, ἰδὼν τὸν ἀγαθὸν καὶ τελεσθεὶς παρʼ αὐτῷ, τὰ τῆς σιγῆς ἄρρητα ἐφύλαξε, καὶ ὤμοσε καθὼς γέγραπται, ὤμοσε κύριος καὶ οὐ μεταμεληθήσεται.

“Swear,” says Justin, “if you wish to know what eye has not seen and ear has not heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, the Good one who is above all, the higher: swear to keep unspoken the things of the teaching that are kept in silence. For our father too, having seen the Good one and been initiated with him, kept the unspoken things of silence, and swore, as it is written: ‘The Lord swore and will not repent.’”
