Refutation of All Heresies 5.26.36

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Justin reads Isaiah's “Hear, O heaven” as addressed to spirit and soul, with Israel meaning Eden.

English · Claude translation

When, then, the prophets say, “Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth; the Lord has spoken,” by heaven, he says, he means the spirit in man, that of Elohim; by earth the soul in man together with the spirit; by Lord, Baruch; and by Israel, Eden; for the consort of Elohim is called Eden and also Israel.
