Refutation of All Heresies 5.8.10
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: Two statues at Samothrace are said to represent the Primal Man and the reborn spiritual man.
English · Claude translation
In the sanctuary of the Samothracians stand two statues of naked men, with both hands stretched up to heaven and their private parts turned upward, like the statue of Hermes at Cyllene. These statues are images of the Primal Man and of the regenerated spiritual man, in every respect of the same substance as that Man.
