Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Τὸν αὐτὸν δὲ τοῦτον, φησί, Φρύγες καὶ Πάπαν καλοῦσιν, ὅτι πάντα ἔπαυσεν ἀτάκτως καὶ πλημμελῶς πρὸ τῆς ἑαυτοῦ φανερώσεως κεκινημένα. Τὸ γὰρ ὄνομα, φησί, τοῦ πάπα πάντων ὁμοῦ ἐστὶ τῶν ἐπουρανίων καὶ ἐπιγείων καὶ καταχθονίων λεγόντων· παῦε παῦε τὴν ἀσυμφωνίαν τοῦ κόσμου καὶ ποίησον εἰρήνην τοῖς μακράν, τουτέστι τοῖς ὑλικοῖς καὶ χοϊκοῖς, καὶ εἰρήνην τοῖς ἐγγύς, τουτέστι τοῖς πνευματικοῖς καὶ νοεροῖς τελείοις ἀνθρώποις. English · Claude translation

This same one, he says, the Phrygians also call Papas, because he stopped all things that were moving in disorder and discord before his manifestation. For the name Papas, he says, belongs to all things in heaven and on earth and under the earth together, saying: "Stop, stop the discord of the world, and make peace for those far off," that is, the material and earthly, "and peace for those near," that is, the spiritual and intellectual perfect men. The Phrygians also call this same one a corpse, as though buried in the body as in a tomb and grave.
