Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Irenaeus exposed these rites, which some deny; Hippolytus has inquired carefully into their two washings.

Καὶ γὰρ καὶ ὁ μακάριος πρεσβύτερος Εἰρηναῖος παρρησιαίτερον τῷ ἐλέγχῳ προσενεχθεὶς τὰ τοιαῦτα λούσματα καὶ ἀπολυτρώσεις ἐξέθετο, ἁδρομερέστερον εἰπὼν ἃ πράσσουσιν, οἷς ἐντυχόντες τινὲς αὐτῶν ἤρνηνται οὕτως παρειληφέναι, ἀεὶ ἀρνεῖσθαι μανθάνοντες. Διὸ φροντὶς ἡμῖν γεγένηται ἀκριβέστερον ἐπιζητῆσαι καὶ ἀνευρεῖν λεπτομερῶς, ἃ καὶ ἐν τῷ πρώτῳ λουτρῷ παραδιδόασι, τὸ τοιοῦτο καλοῦντες, καὶ ἐν τῷ δευτέρῳ, ὃ ἀπολύτρωσιν καλοῦσιν.

For the blessed presbyter Irenaeus too, having undertaken the refutation with greater frankness, set out such washings and redemptions, describing rather broadly what they do; some of them, having read it, have denied that they received it so, being always taught to deny. Therefore we have taken care to inquire more exactly and to find out in detail what they hand down both in the first washing, as they call it, and in the second, which they call redemption.
