Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The ethereal region down to the moon is ruled by the great Archon; then a second, lesser Archon arose from the seed-mass.

Πάντα οὖν ἔστι προνοούμενα καὶ διοικούμενα ὑπὸ τῆς ἐντελεχείας τοῦ ἄρχοντος τοῦ μεγάλου τὰ αἰθέρια, ἅτινα μέχρι σελήνης ἐστίν· ἐκεῖθεν γὰρ ἀὴρ αἰθέρος διακρίνεται. Κεκοσμημένων οὖν πάντων τῶν αἰθερίων πάλιν ἀπὸ τῆς πανσπερμίας ἄλλος ἄρχων ἀνέβη, μείζων μὲν πάντων τῶν ὑποκειμένων χωρὶς μέντοι τῆς καταλελειμμένης υἱότητος, πολὺ δὲ ὑποδεέστερος τοῦ πρώτου ἄρχοντος. Ἔστι δὲ καὶ οὗτος ἄρρητος ὑπʼ αὐτῶν λεγόμενος.

English · Claude translation

All the ethereal things, then, which extend as far as the moon, are provided for and governed by the actuality of the great Archon; for from there air is distinguished from ether. When all the ethereal things had been set in order, again from the seed-mass another Archon went up, greater than all the things beneath, except for the Sonship left behind, but much inferior to the first Archon. And this one too is called unspeakable by them.
