Refutation of All Heresies 7.32.1
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: Carpocrates taught that angels made the world and that Jesus, son of Joseph, received power from above because his pure soul remembered what it had seen with God.
English · Claude translation
Carpocrates says that the world and the things in it were made by angels far inferior to the unbegotten Father, and that Jesus was begotten of Joseph, and being like other human beings became more righteous than the rest; and that his soul, being vigorous and pure, remembered the things it had seen in its circuit with the unbegotten God, and for this reason a power was sent down to it by him, so that through it he might be able to escape the world-makers;

Notes
Translation notes
- Hippolytus follows Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.25. The soul's heavenly “circuit” recalls Plato, Phaedrus 247.
