Refutation of All Heresies 8.19.1
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: The Phrygians (Montanists) follow Montanus, Priscilla, and Maximilla as prophets of the Paraclete and claim to learn more from their books than from Scripture.
English · Claude translation
Others, themselves more heretical in nature, Phrygians by race, have been deceived, having been taken in by certain women called Priscilla and Maximilla, whom they consider prophetesses, saying that the Paraclete Spirit has come into them; and before them they likewise glorify a certain Montanus as a prophet. Having countless books of theirs, they go astray, neither judging what was spoken by them by reason nor giving heed to those able to judge, but they hold to their faith in them without discernment, claiming that they have learned something more through them than from the Law and the Prophets and the Gospels.
