Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Montanists' many books are worthless and should be ignored by the sound-minded.

Ἱκανὰ μὲν οὖν καὶ τὰ περὶ τούτων εἰρημένα κρίνομεν, διʼ ὀλίγων τὰ πολλὰ φλύαρα αὐτῶν βιβλία τε καὶ ἐπιχειρήματα πᾶσιν ἐπιδείξαντες ἀσθενῆ ὄντα καὶ μηδενὸς λόγου ἄξια, οἷς οὐ χρὴ προσέχειν τοὺς ὑγιαίνοντα νοῦν κεκτημένους.

We judge, then, that what has been said about these too is sufficient, having shown to all in a few words that their many silly books and arguments are weak and worth nothing, and that those who possess a sound mind ought not to heed them.
